Dental FAQs From Your Yucca Valley Dentist
Have a question about your teeth that you always forget to ask at your checkup? You’re not alone. Our dental FAQs page gathers the questions patients ask us most often about common dental health concerns, from bleeding gums to sensitive teeth. At Lombardo & Cho Dentistry, we believe informed patients make confident decisions, so we answer every question honestly and in plain language. If you don’t see your question here, your Yucca Valley dentist is always happy to talk it through in person.
Most patients do well with a checkup and cleaning every six months. People with gum disease, a history of frequent cavities, or certain health conditions may benefit from more frequent visits. We’ll recommend a schedule that fits your specific needs.
Bleeding gums are often an early sign of gingivitis, the first stage of gum disease. Plaque that builds up along the gumline irritates the tissue and causes inflammation. The good news is that gingivitis is reversible when caught early. A professional cleaning and consistent brushing and flossing usually clear it up. If bleeding lasts more than a week or two, schedule an exam so we can check for deeper problems and discuss treatments like scaling and root planing.
Brush twice a day for two minutes with fluoride toothpaste, floss once a day, and limit sugary snacks and drinks between meals. Regular cleanings remove hardened plaque that brushing can’t reach. For children, pit and fissure sealants add an extra layer of protection to the chewing surfaces of back teeth.
Occasional bad breath is usually caused by food, coffee, or skipping a brushing session. Persistent bad breath, however, can point to gum disease, tooth decay, dry mouth, or bacteria on the tongue. If brushing your tongue and staying hydrated don’t help, let us take a closer look.
Sensitivity happens when the protective enamel wears down or gums recede, exposing the softer layer underneath. Cavities, cracked teeth, and grinding can also cause it. A desensitizing toothpaste often helps, but sudden or sharp sensitivity deserves a visit.
What should I do if a tooth gets knocked out?
Pick the tooth up by the crown, not the root, and rinse it gently without scrubbing. Try to place it back in the socket, or keep it in a small container of milk. Then call us right away. Acting within the first hour gives the tooth the best chance of being saved. Here’s a quick guide to common symptoms and what they may mean:
Symptom | What It Might Mean | Your Next Step |
Bleeding gums | Gingivitis or early gum disease | Improve flossing and schedule a cleaning |
Sensitivity to temperature | Worn enamel, receding gums, or decay | Try desensitizing toothpaste and book an exam |
Lingering toothache | Deep decay or infected pulp | Call us for an evaluation soon |
Persistent bad breath | Gum disease, decay, or dry mouth | Schedule a checkup |
Swelling in the jaw or face | Possible infection or abscess | Contact our office right away |
When should my child first see a dentist?
Children should have their first dental visit by their first birthday or within six months of their first tooth appearing. Early visits help kids get comfortable in the dental chair and allow us to spot problems before they grow. Our office is child-friendly, and we offer gentle options like silver diamine fluoride for young patients with early decay.
Do wisdom teeth always need to come out?
No. Some people have plenty of room for their wisdom teeth, and some never develop them at all. Removal is usually recommended when wisdom teeth are impacted, crowding other teeth, or causing pain or infection. Our in-house oral surgeon performs wisdom teeth removal in our office, and sedation is available for oral surgery procedures.
What are my options for replacing a missing tooth?
Popular options include dental implants, bridges, full and partial dentures, and implant-retained dentures. Dental implants are often the most natural-feeling and long-lasting choice because they replace the tooth root as well as the visible crown. We offer free consultations to help you compare options and find the right fit for your smile and budget.
